Craig G Smith

December 28, 1948 — September 29, 2025

Craig Glenn Smith passed from this mortal plane on September 29, 2025. In his words, “It was time to see what was behind door number three.” He was joyfully reunited with the greatest parents anyone has ever known, his oldest son Clay, his hero uncle Harold, and several cherished friends.

Craig is survived by his partner in this life and the eternities, Colleen King Smith; his children: Jesse Wilson (Mandy), Amber Bascom (Kreston), Garrett Wilson, Kayla Johnson (Ryan), and Jake Smith (Jade); eleven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Craig was born on December 28, 1948, during one of the snowiest years on record. At age two, his family moved to Sandy, into a large house on 2.5 acres with a big gully that was their playground. He had three sisters—Becky Mitchell (Ken), Dianne Smith (Harold), and Susan Montgomery (John)—and two brothers: Derrell Smith (Lanore) and Brad Smith (DeAnn). Being part of a big family meant there was always someone to work with—or play with.

He graduated from Jordan High School in 1967, where highlights included a leading role in the school play, competing in the state finals for debate, making the track team, and spending a year as a cheerleader.

After attending BYU for a year, Craig served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in England. Upon returning, he continued his education and worked in the BYU ticket office, eventually becoming the business manager for special events at the new Marriott Center. He worked for 40 years at BYU in finance and spent many years at Macey’s grocery store. He also worked at H&R Block for 21 years, but his all-time, hands-down favorite job was the last six years at Home Depot in Provo.

Craig served faithfully in the LDS Church in numerous callings, including two Bishoprics, seven years on the High Council, Young Men President, and various stake callings. He was, however, best known for his lifelong dedication to the Boy Scouts, where he served as a passionate and impactful leader.

You could count on Craig to be the life of every party. His many hobbies included raising roller pigeons, fishing, hunting, camping, wood carving, cornhole, watching football (Go Cougs!), reading, and playing cards. He was quick-witted and carried an arsenal of jokes he could deliver on command. He was a dedicated father and grandfather to his own posterity, and a father figure to many more.

Craig lived fully, laughed often, and loved deeply. His presence lit up every room, and his absence will be profoundly felt. Though he has passed through door number three, his legacy of warmth, humor, service, and faith lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS meetinghouse located at 789 Arrowhead Trail, Payson Utah, followed by interment at Payson cemetery. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 am. All who knew and loved Craig are welcome to attend and celebrate his remarkable life.
