Fred Lee Ward

Fred Lee Ward, 75, of Provo, returned to his Heavenly Father on February 1, 2023, surrounded by family after a valiant fight against Multiple Myeloma.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother, uncle, teacher and friend.
Fred was born February 12th, 1947, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They lived in the Rose Park area. He was the third of four children. He went to school at Onequa Elementary, Jackson Junior High, and then graduated from West High in 1965, where he was on the golf team. His Dad and brothers taught him the game of golf and it has been a lifetime love. He then passed his love of golf to his children and grandchildren and played whenever he could with his closest friend Bud. He also played every year in The Snake Chase Golf Tournament in Mesquite that was organized by his nephew, Brad Ward, in 2000. It was a fun family tradition and reunion he enjoyed every year.
Fred proudly served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the South German Mission from 1966-1968. He graduated from BYU in 1971 with a BA in Germanic Languages and from the Army R.O.T.C. He was also trained as a pilot in the R.O.T.C. and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Army and served three months active duty at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His branch was Field Artillery. Then he served nine years in the National Guard, retiring as a Captain.
Fred met his wife Denise (Deni) Daly in 1968. He asked her to marry him two weeks later. They were sealed for time and all eternity on August 14, 1969 in the Salt Lake Temple. They were blessed with seven children, five daughters and two sons. They have been married for 53 years. The family has lived in Oklahoma, California, Nevada and Alaska and have lived in Utah for 44 years.
Fred had a variety of jobs through the years, from delivering Tupperware all over Los Angeles, to being a partner in a ski business, a gold mining business in Alaska, an airplane pilot and mechanic, an automotive mechanic, and then became an Automotive teacher at Mountain View High School for 14 years. After retiring from Mountain View he taught at UVU as a Mechanics teacher, and then moved to MTEC in Spanish Fork where he ended his teaching career when he became ill in April 2022. His most rewarding job was teaching, although he would share many stories from all his life adventures.
Fred was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, his favorite being over the public tours in the early eighties at the Provo Tabernacle, now the Provo City Center Temple. He loved giving the tours himself and teaching all about the history and occasionally playing the big pipe organ. He was devastated when the Tabernacle burned and was elated when it was announced that it was going to be restored and changed into a new Temple. He also participated in the Temple Open House.
Fred had many hobbies including golf, skiing, flying, playing guitar, singing in the barbershop chorus and a quartet, genealogy, reading, making pine furniture and other wood projects, knife collecting, making Native American crafts, leather crafts, camping out west and picking pine-nuts with the Dotson Family. He loved vintage cars and airplanes and loved to collect auto memorabilia. Next to golf, some of his favorite things were Pepsi, snickers, neccos, circus peanuts, Cracker Barrel meatloaf, iced oatmeal cookies and his favorite cake was devils food with white frosting, which he called "Dumb cake". His kids and grandkids would often bring him his favorite treats or give gift cards so he could take Grandma out to dinner.
He was always building things for family or neighbors and was always willing to help when someone needed a vehicle repaired. He was selfless and caring and always willing to help without asking or expecting anything in return. He leaves behind a legacy of family, hard work, kindness, generosity, selflessness and love. We lost a great man that will live on in our hearts forever.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary Ward, his oldest brother, Stanley D. Ward, his older brother Robert Oliver Ward, son-in-law, Chad Zamora, daughter-in-law, Lynlee Robinson Ward, and his brother-in-law Kenneth Michael Kieffer.
He is survived by his wife, Denise, his daughter Lianne (Chad) Zamora of Lehi, Bryan Ward (Lynlee) of Provo, Melissa Ward Carter of Santaquin, Angela McDonald(Sean) of West Jordan, Timothy Ward (Casey) of Springville, Samantha Brown (Bill) of Spanish Fork and Stephanie Ward (Hugo) of Provo. Seventeen grandchildren, Aidan, Megan and Connor Zamora, Zaria, Blaize and Brycen Ward, Wyatt and Madison Carter, Taryn and Ryder McDonald, Kierra Bezzant and Gabriel Ward, Shelbi Campbell, Isaac and Paizlyn Blackmore and Daniel and Shyah Ward. Two great grandchildren, Addalyn and Ryker Smith of Goldsboro, NC and another great-granddaughter on the way. His sister Mary Lue Kieffer of Kuna, Idaho, his sister-in-law, Donna Ward of Draper and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be held on Saturday, February 11th, 2023, at noon at the Marrott Meadows LDS Chapel. 102 North 2400 West Provo, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the services from 10:00am - 11:45am.
His ashes will be buried next to his parents in April, later this year at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
We wish to express our gratitude to Dr. Brandt Esplin, Dr. David Beckstead, the IHC Homecare and Hospice nurses and all others that helped- friends, neighbors and especially family who were there to support us during this difficult time.
