It is with a mix of sadness and celebration that we remember the life of Hetty Schaeffer, who passed away peacefully on April 4, 2024 in Spanish Fork, Utah.
Born in Padang, Padang City, West Sumatra, Indonesia on September 13, 1932, Hetty was the embodiment of dedication, humility, talent, and courage. These traits guided her through a life filled with richness and love, despite the many difficulties she encountered.
Hetty's life was a beautiful tapestry of faith and service. A devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, she served as a church organist for 50 years, a testament to her fervent faith and exceptional musical ability. Hetty's passion extended to her work as a secretary and short-hand typist in the insurance industry, and her hobbies/talents of piano playing, cooking, gardening, sewing, and knitting, which she shared generously with her family and community.
Her courage was evident from her childhood, having endured the invasion of Indonesia by the Japanese during WWII at just 9 years old. This experience shaped her humble appreciation for family relationships and her unwavering faith in the Lord.
Hetty lived in various places including Amsterdam, Netherlands: Sumatra, Indonesia; Lemon Grove and West Covina, California before settling in Spanish Fork, Utah.
She was a beloved wife to the late George Schaeffer, whom she married on May 11, 1955, and served a church mission with him in Indonesia.
Hetty was a cherished mother to her surviving children: Inge Carter, Paul Schaeffer and Susan Krupa. She was also the seventh of eight children to the late Pieter and Catharina Bodeman.
